GOOOOOOOOD morning folks – at least it’s morning here – 4:52 am!
I got up at 4 am which has become the norm for me this week starting with 3 am the day after I returned from London followed by 4 am and 5 am the two mornings after that.
What’s going on?
I’ve read in several raw food books that the cleaner you become inside, the less sleep you need. Could this be what’s happening? Or am I still getting over jet lag?
More on that later.
So here I am wide awake, pecking away at the keyboard with incredible energy and clarity, the likes of which I’ve never before experienced, especially this early!
As you know, I like to end my week with a gratitude post where I share things I’m grateful for. I’m going to make this week’s post a little different today.
When I wrote How Making an Irrational, Last Minute Decision Can Change Your Life (which was about my trip to London), I tried to add a ton of photos from the trip but it messed everything up horribly. I ended up working on that piece for over 12 hours, uploading, deleting and then transferring photos from WordPress to Facebook!
But because some of you are not members of Facebook and therefore not able to access the other photos, I’m going to put a few more of them throughout this post even if they have nothing to do with what I’m writing about. Thankfully, due to a new feature with WordPress, you’ll see captions beneath them explaining what you’re looking at. How’s that?
So, let’s have at it.
What am I grateful for?
Raw Food Journey Continues to Produce Fascinating Stuff
Need Less Sleep
As I mentioned above, I have been getting up earlier this past week. At first I attributed it to the 5 hour time difference but it’s now Saturday. That’s a full 4 days after returning from London - don’t you think that by now I’d be settled in? I think that’s plenty of time to readjust to the 5 hour time difference, don’t you?
I’ve been reading in numerous raw food books that one of the things that tends to happen to a person when he/she becomes cleaner on a cellular level, that there is less and less need to sleep. Hmmm….interesting.
I got up at 4 am this morning, 5 am yesterday, 4 am the day before and 3 am the day after returning from London. Not only was I able to climb out of bed with incredible energy but I also seem to feel a sense of clarity too. It remains to be seen if this pattern will continue but I find it utterly fascinating!
Before I left for London, I was getting up around 7, sometimes 6. But 3, 4 or 5 am????
Stay tuned!
Been Two Weeks Since I Smoked A Cigar!
You all know how transparent I’ve been while on this raw food journey. In one of my posts from a couple months ago, I admitted that while I was getting cleaner inside, I was still enjoying my daily cigar smoke. I even posted a picture of me smoking one night behind my brother’s house in Virginia.
Well, I’m shocked to tell you this because I am a huge cigar lover. For 10 years I had been smoking at least one cigar a day. But it’s been TWO WEEKS since I last had one. And believe it or not, I’ve not had the desire to light up since returning from London.
Will this last? That remains to be seen. One thing I’ve noticed about this raw food journey is that the things that were not good for me seem to be falling by the wayside, not because I’ve forced myself to give them up (in other words “deprive myself”) but because they seem to be falling away naturally.
Like what’s been happening with less intake of meat, particularly chicken, my favorite cooked meat. I was a huge chicken lover – I practically had chicken several times a week but it’s been a while since I’ve had a hearty portion of it. I haven’t stopped eating them entirely since I sometimes have it in my salads when eating out but not once have I opened the frozen chicken bag inside the freezer!
Basically what I’m trying to say is that somehow all the things I once craved (coffee is another example – I’ve actually not had a cup in at least 1 month) have become less and less attractive.
It’s AMAZING! I have not felt deprived nor have I forced myself to give up anything. They just seem to drop away naturally. That’s another thing to be grateful for.
Will the cigar habit be completely eliminated? We shall see but having gone two weeks without lighting up is definitely a good sign!
By the way, I wouldn’t be surprised if the fact that I haven’t had a cigar has changed my taste buds, which leads me to the next subject……..
Drinking Water From the Supermarket Now Tastes Funny!

Taking the train from Brighton to Highbury, UK by myself. By the 4th day, I was comfortable enough to get around on my own.
Of course, when I got back from my trip, I had to go grocery shopping. Among several fruits and vegetables I bought, I also got a gallon of spring water. For quite some time, I had been buying spring and/or distilled water from the supermarket because at least in theory they are cleaner and safer than tap water. Right?
Well, imagine my shock when I had my first glass of water the morning after I got back. It tasted like…..
PLASTIC!!
I was like, WHAT THE HECK?!? No, let me be blunt here – WTF!!!!!!
YUCK!
A couple of things are happening here.
Number one, my taste buds are changing because I haven’t had a cigar in two weeks. I also think it has to do with the fact that my whole body has been changing on a deeper, cellular level.
You all know that I started eating raw in September 2008. That’s what, two months now? (Counting on my fingers….September, October…..). Yeah, two months, almost 3.
During that time, I’ve also been doing a heck of a lot of research and one thing that keeps popping out is how the raw foodist tends to become more sensitive overall. The senses become heightened in ways never before experienced and I’m just starting to see that.
My other senses are also becoming more acute like my sense of smell. I still can’t read long distance without my glasses so I’m not sure about that but still…..
What do I drink now? LOL.
Stay tuned!
People Are Telling Me That I Look Different

Remember this? This was at the beginning of my Raw Food Journey in September 2008. Now compare this to other photos you see here. See the difference?
The other night I was at my church’s board meeting as I’m Vice Chair of its foundation. When I arrived, the few people that were there seemed to look at me in a way they never did before. Intuitively I knew they were looking at me in wonderment but not quite understanding what they were looking at. You know what I mean??
Have you ever had someone look at you in a funny way because they see something different about you but can’t quite put their finger on it?
After it was over and I was on my way home, I got a message on my Blackberry. It was from the interpreter who was at the meeting (the foundation hired an interpreter to help me understand what’s happening at board meetings).
In her message she said not once but twice that I glowed!
Apparently this is another common feature among raw foodists. You recall a snippet of a report Steve Pavlina wrote about his experience at the Raw Food Festival in Sedona, AZ earlier this year. He said that even people who were 20 years older than him seemed exude a certain amount of sensuality and chemistry that he found intoxicating to the point where it was like everyone had this inner radiance that was coming out. In other words – they were glowing. Every single raw food book I’ve read also said the same thing.
And now it seems to be happening to me. Even I noticed it in the London photos. Here, take a look at a photo I took back in September in my bathroom and compare it with the others you see here. Do you see a difference?
It’s amazing, and I’m very grateful for it. Thank you God for leading me down this incredible journey!
Update: While taking a shower this morning and seeing the dry brush hanging in there, it occurred to me that dry brushing my body from top to bottom might also be contributing to the “glow factor.” When dry brushing yourself, you’re getting rid of dead body cells that don’t always wash off when you take a shower. That and the recent colonic I did at Crossroads. Interesting, isn’t it? Every little bit helps!
Miracles Seem to be Sprouting Everywhere

View from on top of the London Eye (see www.londoneye.com for more information). Notice light from the heavens pouring through the clouds!
The best example I can think of this is what happened on my recent overseas trip. I made a last minute, seemingly irrational decision to drop everything and go to London for a whole week without much thought or planning put into it.
Not only did I find a very reasonable airfare but everything fell into place the moment I made the decision to go until I got back. I felt GREAT throughout entire the week I was there and made awesome new friends, many of whom I will not only stay in touch with but also travel with and perhaps conduct business with some of them.
In fact, this trip did bring me some business opportunities the details of which I cannot reveal just yet. I’m stoked!
On top of all that, my desire to travel the world has been reawakened, thanks to a man I met there who is a teacher for the deaf who somehow manages to travel the world on a meager salary. If he can do it, why can’t I? Why can’t you?
That’s just one example. There are other miracles that appear to be manifesting as we speak.
As I like to say, stay tuned!
Some of You Are Also Embarking on the Raw Food Journey
It delights and humbles me to know that some of you have taken up the raw food journey alongside with me. Some of you have increased your intake of fruits and vegetables. A couple of friends from London are getting themselves the UK version of the Vita-Mix blender. You have taken my suggestions and bought books like The Raw Food Detox Diet and others.
WOW!
I am grateful to know that my own journey has inspired you to reach new heights with your own life. Whether or not you decide to experiment with raw foods, I’ve been receiving feedback on how my blog posts have encouraged you to step up to the plate and face whatever fears or issues you maybe having. That really makes my day!
It’s humbling to know that whatever I’m doing is actually making a difference in your life, regardless of what I write about. I’m thankful to know this. I’m also excited to see the level of participation grow here at Adversity University. You guys ROCK!
Life has become very much more exciting since I went raw in September. Before we go, let me just make it clear that I am not 100 percent raw and don’t think I will be. I would say that I am about 80 percent raw with the rest being the occasional snippets of cooked and processed foods like chicken and peanut butter pretzels (I LOVE THEM!), to name a few.
My raw food intake in London was approximately 50-50. You will find that when you travel, unless you’re 100 percent committed to eating nothing but raw food, you will slide up and down the percentage scale. The key is not to beat yourself up over it.
All I can say is do the best you can with what you’re presented with and everything will be fine. Remember, this is a lifelong journey, not an overnight crash diet. You’re gradually changing your relationship with food, enhancing your life, becoming more aware/selective about what goes in your body and taking your health to the next level. All of this takes time. So if I may say so myself, I say, CHILL!
If you want to see more photos, you’ll definitely have to go to Facebook to see them. You have to be a member and be “friends” with me on there in order to access my photo albums (London Trip 2008).
With that said, have a fabulous weekend – you deserve it.

What a post full of gratitude Stephen! The whole raw food diet – while I think it would be very hard for me – your writing about it has at least convinced me to add more raw foods into my diet – not ready to take the big leap yet – but I’m going to start with some baby steps in this direction…we’ll see how it goes! The idea of how you sleep has been affected really intrigues me.
How has an attitude of gratitude changed my life? Simple. My life has just become so much more positive. Several years ago – I had gained a bunch of weight, and I pretty much had a neutral to negative attitude. The world was at fault for my problems. I finally owned up to them being my own, starting with improving my health. And this just led into a whole improvement in my mental outlook as well. My life has really done a 180 in the last probably four years. And life just seems to “work out” – in sometimes mysterious ways – and that’s God at work in my life – and me allowing Him to be there!

@ Lance:
Wow Lance, you are lightening fast with leaving the first comment. I just finished it a minute ago! Amazing.
I’m thrilled to know that my writing about my experiences has “convinced” you to at least add more portions of raw foods into your diet although it’s not my intentions to convince anyone of anything. Basically my goal is to share what’s out there and how it’s affecting me and if a person wants to move in that direction, I’m thrilled. But if the person isn’t interested, that’s cool too because it’s each to his/her own. Whatever works best for you and others is the right solution.
Thanks for being the FIRST to respond to my question on how having an attitude of gratitude has change your life. Wow. More positive. What a change of attitude you had by taking on responsibility for your attitude and making some health improvements. That’s awesome.
Yes, I agree one thousand percent that when we take our health to the next level, it extends to other areas of our lives including mental, physical and spiritual.
Oh I love how you ended with “life just seems to workout – in sometimes mysterious ways – and that’s God at work in my life.” I agree totally.
OH YES, LIFE IS DEFINITELY MYSTERIOUS AND I LOVE IT

I am making smoothies daily for breakfast and eating more raw daily encouraged by your journey. In celebrating a family bday I had cake last night which gave me a belly ache all night. I am actually gratefuly for the belly ache as a sign that my body is displeased. In gratitude to my collectors I have created an art calendar which makes each image available for a mere two dollars a piece. I am donating the small profit to charity. It is my goal for my work to bring joy. You can preview the calendar here http://www.lulu.com/content/4836131

@ Robin Maria Pedrero:
You too!?!? Wahoooooooooo!
How do you like the smoothies? What are you putting in the blender? Do tell!
Yes, the bellyache is definitely a sign from your body – in fact, your body just communicated with you by giving you a bellyache. When we go through whatever pains and aches, that’s the body “talking” to us. Pretty neat stuff.
I’m more than happy to preview your calendar – you just inspired me to look at Lulu again as a possible place to publish my book. I’ve been letting that project sit on the shelves toooooo long.
By the way, I’m going to let that self-serving link slide for now – it’s generally my unwritten policy not to let people promote themselves in the comment section but I’m feeling outrageously grateful and thankful that I’m letting it go. You lucky girl!
Thanks for sharing.

As usual, I always enjoy reading your posts, Stephen, while I am “eating” my frozen fruit smoothie like a snow cone!
So, what will you drink now? Why don’t you try alkaline water?? I guess you’ll have to buy a machine for that. I read that even the spring/filtered water has acid in it, possibly the reason you did not like the taste.
I am trying to get back on track after straying a bit too much and getting sick last week… little by little.

One more thing, Stephen, to be honest with you, I’m getting a bit tired of seeing that “cake” photo in your gratitude posts!!
So, what I am going to do is when you come down here to visit your brother during X-mas, I am going to take you to an Italian restaurant (after eating our “raw” lunch, that is) and take a photo of it before EATING that Tiramisu dessert!! I will be satisfied for once and all!
10:21 am on November 15th, 2008 7
@ Nita:
Alkaline water? Your comment is absolutely amazing, you know why? Because a good friend of mine has been educating me on the value of purchasing a rather expensive water machine that works with tap water which allows you to adjust the PH level in the water you drink! Amazing! Could this be a sign from the universe that I need to look into this (especially since you did not know about my friend’s water machine). Hmmmm….
Little by little is definitely the key – one step at a time – like I said in the post, it’s not an overnight crash diet – it’s a lifelong thing. NO rush.
And so you don’t like that cake photo huh? Hahaha. Okay, fine, you will take me to an Italian resturant and force feed me that Tiramisu dessert AFTER eating a raw meal? OMG, you are so mean. LOL. You’re hilarious too – you crack me up. Oh boy.
Can’t wait to see you during the Christmas holidays when I visit my brother in VA. It’ll be here sooner than you think. Time flying by fast these days.

Hello Stephen!
I saw on we like it raw that you are a motivational speaker.
I would like to become one, I have quite a story to tell and have always loved public speaking. Do you have an agent or are you strictly freelance?
How do you get gigs?
Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated!
stay raw!

@ debbie:
I’m so glad to “meet” another raw foodist! I can’t wait to check out your blog and get to know you more.
How I got started is a long story but I’ll be happy to tell you in a nutshell how I got started. First of all, have you ever heard of Toastmasters? I recommend you get yourself in a local club to get your nuts and bolts of speaking together with their help and support.
Then I’d go out and speak to civic clubs like Kiwanis, Lion’s, Rotary, etc. They don’t pay but they’re always looking for speakers. Usually they’ll “pay” you with a meal so you’ll never be starving but I can see how that might be a challenge since you’re a raw foodist. When I first started, I was not into raw foods at all (10 years ago).
Then I created a website and began to build a business after leaving Wall Street in the late 90′s. It takes a very long time to get your name out there unless you have a savvy marketer helping you (or if you’re one yourself).
The key is to get as much practice as you can, speak from the heart, be authentic and do not be the “jack of all trades.” Turn yourself into an expert on a particular area. Write articles and get them into places like ezine articles dot com. Get yourself known through social media circles like Twitter, Facebook, etc.
Plant seeds and just keep going! That’s my advice.
And yes, stay raw…now off to check your blog and find out exactly who you are and what you’re up to in the raw world! Thanks for contacting me.

You ask what I am putting in the blender, it is different combinations, usually I use banana, grapes, fresh orange from my tree, always frozen spinach and a small amount of rice or almond milk. I vary it with berries, bee pollen, peaches, applesauce etc. I tried Montel’s lettuce one, but I do not own a vitamix so it was not too great.
=)
Thanks for including my link for charity.

@ Robin Maria Pedrero:
Cool! Thanks for sharing. I love learning about what others put in their blenders. It’s like wanting to see the insides of a person’s home. Isn’t that funny?
In an upcoming blog post at some point, I’m going to write about how this journey has caused or helped me rely on my intuition more and more. What that means is when I get up in the morning to make my green smoothie, while I throw in the same base (green leafy vegetable like spinach or kale) and banana, the other ingredients vary according to whatever I’m feeling I should do. Therefore, no two smoothies are the same. They’re “similiar” but not exactly the same.
Some days my smoothie is thick while others are thinner/watery.

Heya Stephen
I always print your posts so I can read it all the way home in public transport. But haven’t really had the chance to post my comments as it has been busy here at work.
Until now. I have been following your Raw Food journey and I have to say it is quite fascinating reading your experiences. I can say you are positively glowing indeed and it shows!
You really are an inspiration to me (and others i am sure!) and I intend to look into raw food diet although I grew up hating healthy food I have made some progress but not as much as I’d like, I resolve to look more into the raw food diet. Then you posted the interview with Philip McCluskey which I have printed and well I will post the comments on that.
Anyways, I hope this may help me stop with the chocolate addicition!
Your trip sounded like a fun and interesting experience.
All your experiences shows that God indeed does have plan for us. This was confirmed when I had another angelic experience recently – I will post my comments in one of your threads (How to have a Conversation with God and Your angels) I think you will love it.
So much so when I went for a walk yesterday I decided “Okay, God, I now allow you to help me with my journey and be the best person I want to be” and suddenly I could feel my angels and spirit guides around me happy and I could not believe how happy I felt right away.
This is just the start. All I know is things are changing and and I got so much to learn. I am finally happy to let God and my angels guide me.
Stephen thank you!

@ Abhishek:
Have you ever been to London? If not, you should definitely go! It’s so much fun.
