So are you saying there’s a TV commercial in my future? LOL That’d be cool!

Did you see this commerical floating around on the Internet or did you actually see it on television? I’m thinking you probably didn’t see it on TV because they haven’t “aired” it yet.

But in any case, you might be shocked to learn that there are some parts of the deaf community (those who don’t use sign language) who are in an uproar over this because they feel the rest of the population will think most deaf people (like myself) can’t talk. I can understand their pain.

Imagine if this commercial had a deaf person (like me) talking throughout the commercial without using sign. The very same people who praised this commercial would be in an uproar.

Can’t make everyone happy! Even though I don’t sign very much, I thought it was a pretty cool commercial.

It feels GREAT when we can laugh with everyone else, doesn’t it? At my church we have a monthly “movie night” that I enjoy very much because the organizer is adamant about making sure the movies are closed captioned so that I can be “included.” There were a few times when the equipment or the movie wasn’t producing the captioning and a struggle would ensue to get it fixed. This would sometimes delay the start of movie night to some people’s chagrin.

But the movie organizer refused to play a movie where I couldn’t laugh, cry or whatever with the rest of them. I’m so blessed to have people who truly care about providing equal access so that I can have fun too.
