I remember toastmasters. Great reference. And you're so right once you get out there and do it it becomes easier to let it rip from a place of authenticity. You start to realize that's all people want after all! Thanks for the post.

Things have changed a LOT since I wrote that article. Somewhere along the line I experienced a very powerful yet subtle shift deep inside me that has totally transformed the way I speak on stage. For one thing, I noticed that while I still feel "nervous energy" it's not the kind that makes me lose sleep the night before or feel "sick to my stomach." It's hard to explain but it has totally given me a new infusion of energy, power and strength that I never, or rarely felt during the earlier part of my speaking career. I'm glad you thought I wrote something of value here - the key is being authentic about what you write - otherwise, it's just a bunch of recycled stuff. Cheers!

Hi there, I genuinely apprecitate your insights on being a motivational speaker. I read a lot of blogs in the business but, I have to say the majority are garbage. It's nice to see that your able to write something of value on this subject. As I'm certain you know there is plenty of so known as motivational speaker "experts" but, I definitely wish far more persons took this seriously simply because, becoming motivational speakers truely does effect peoples lives and has a major impact on how they really feel. believe how an individual feels on the inside will be the most critical factor in life much more so than cash or fame.

I wish I was more like you. I'm a really shy person, and it's kind of annoying. I wish to be more extrovert, but I am really having trouble being in large crowds and even more speaking to, or in front of, large crowds.

Good for you! Sometimes you have to force yourself to do the thing you fear the most and then afterwards you wonder, "Wow, that wasn't so bad!"

I wont say that I'm an active public speaker but I have spoken many times in front of more than 200 people where my heart was saying "NO!" but I somehow forced myself to it. This is a great article and I learned of many new things here, great work stephen!

I get the TM magazine too. It's full of interesting and helpful information indeed. The beauty of TM is that it's open to everyone regardless of speaking experience. It's also a place where everyone has the same thing in common, which is almost everyone gets nervous when speaking in front of a group. This bonds them together because they each know what the other is going through.

In the monthly TM magazine, the stories of how people come to apply their TM skills are surprising and educational. I recall one man turned his love of wine into a livelhood as a wine tasting guide and speaker at vineyards where he took his groups. This and other stories teach us we are only ever limited by fear and also our imagination.

Sometimes life experience also prompts you to take a break from situations like TM that you enjoy. I have known people to take a leave of absence due to family or personal illness, or just because other life commitments have changed. TM is helpful for whatever peiod of your life you become involved. People touch your heart and inspire you to proceed with your life in ways that make you feel good.
