You're absolutely right although I didn't know that success wasn't related to competing or making the finals at that age. Looking back, it was a lesson in taking risks (shaving my teenage head and being only one of two kids in the entire school to do it). I risked ridicule, failure and a host of other things. But apparently I survived! It set the course for the rest of my life, which is being willing to take risks and making the leap of faith.

Stephen, this story reminds people that winning is not what ego tells you it is. Success is not related to competing, not linked to making the finals, not reflectedin getting a trophy, or getting your name into newspaper headlines. Rather, winning is accepting yourself for who you are, for recognizing that your best is what makes you successful, regardless of what you do. People will often refer to champion athletes at the top of their game as being mentors for desirable success. This story reminds people that each person is a winner because you only ever truly compete with yourself.

That's GREAT! What things are you learning that you had not conceived of before? Thank you for the "generous nature" compliment. I certainly give what I am capable of giving. I'm thankful for the ability to share via my writing skills.

Patricia:

A lot of what we've done as youngsters is usually in preparation for the future, whether good or bad. We go through things for a reason. My swimming ambitions was just the start of habits I would eventually carry throughout the rest of my life (i.e. focus, determination and taking risks).

Thanks for the "you've still got it" compliment. That means a lot to me. :)

Stephen, thanks for sharing this story. It shows that you were very determined even as a teenager to do what was necessary to achieve what you wanted out of life. Congratulations on the long ago victory. Today, you've still got it.
